What to Do When Life Throws You a Curveball: Embracing Surrender, Soul Contracts, and Personal Transformation
May 21, 2025
Life has a funny way of throwing us curveballs.
We can be moving along at full speed, achieving goals, and feeling like everything is falling into place, only to be suddenly stopped in our tracks.
When life throws us these challenges, it can feel overwhelming, but what if I told you that these moments of suffering and struggle are actually opportunities for transformation?
In this post, I’ll share my personal experience of how I navigated a life curveball and how you can use similar steps to realign with your soul’s path, surrender to the flow of the universe, and embrace the lessons hidden in life’s struggles. If you’ve ever felt like you were on the edge or completely off track, you’ll find powerful insights here.
My Personal Experience: When Life Throws You a Curveball
As someone who is always moving at 180 mph, I’ve built a life around constant motion, action, and productivity.
This is what I thought was necessary to achieve my goals and live out my soul’s purpose.
But my body had a different plan. I was ignoring the subtle (and not-so-subtle) signs from my intuition and the Universe, trying to push through exhaustion and discomfort. It wasn’t until my body physically broke down that I realized something had to change.
For nearly three weeks, I dealt with a severe reaction—hives (urticaria)—that left me feeling debilitated.
My body was screaming for me to slow down, but I refused to listen until I couldn’t continue any longer.
That’s when the real lessons started coming in.
The Universe had been showing me the signs to surrender, and finally, I had no choice but to listen.
The Soul Contract with Suffering: Understanding the Purpose Behind Struggle
We all have soul contracts before we incarnate on Earth. These contracts outline the lessons we’re meant to learn during this lifetime. But what does this have to do with suffering?
Suffering, when approached with awareness, becomes a tool for spiritual growth.
It’s not random. It’s not punishment. Suffering is part of our soul’s journey—an invitation to transform, heal, and evolve.
Often, suffering is the catalyst that forces us to stop and reassess our lives.
Without these challenging moments, we might stay stuck in the same patterns, never questioning our direction or purpose.
In my case, the physical discomfort and emotional exhaustion were a wake-up call, urging me to stop, be still, and reflect on what truly mattered.
I realized that my soul had contracted with suffering in this life to break down old patterns of overwork, perfectionism, and constant striving. And when I finally surrendered, the universe revealed the clarity I needed to realign with my higher purpose.
Life will give you signs. Sometimes you're paying attention. Other times, it hits you over the head like a 2 x 4.
Four signs that life’s gone a little off-track
-
Physical Symptoms Flare Up – If your body is acting up, like mine did, that’s your first red flag. It’s telling you that something’s out of balance, and it’s time to slow down and listen. Your body knows when it’s time to rest, but we often ignore it. Listen to the messages your body’s giving you.
-
Emotions Feel Out of Control – You’re overwhelmed, and you can’t seem to catch up. Emotions feel erratic. When this happens, it’s time to step back and reassess. Take a breather and give yourself some space. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
-
Everything Feels Like It’s Spinning – When you feel like you’ve lost your anchor, that’s when you need to pause and reset. Find your center, breathe, and take a moment to recalibrate. When it feels like everything’s out of control, that’s your cue to stop and refocus.
-
You’re Ignoring Your Intuition – You know deep down that you need to slow down or shift, but you keep pushing. That’s when you have to take a pause and hear what your soul is trying to tell you. Trust your intuition, it always knows.
How to Use Four Simple Steps to Realign When Life Feels Off Track
If you’re reading this and thinking, “Yes, that’s exactly how I feel right now,” don’t worry, you’re not alone.
We all experience moments when we feel like we’ve lost our way or been thrown off course.
But these moments aren’t the end—they are an opportunity for realignment.
Here are four powerful steps to take when life feels like it’s spinning out of control:
1. Give Yourself Permission to Stop
We are conditioned to keep moving, keep achieving, and keep doing. But in moments of burnout or overwhelm, the most powerful thing you can do is to give yourself permission to stop. Stopping doesn’t mean giving up—it means giving yourself the space to rest and reset. Listen to your body and soul’s signals. When we pause, we allow ourselves to hear the messages from our higher self and the universe, guiding us back to center.
2. Pull Back, Reassess, and Pivot
When things feel chaotic, it’s important to step back and reassess your current direction. Are you truly aligned with your soul’s path? Is the work you’re doing fulfilling your higher purpose, or are you just going through the motions? Use this pause as an opportunity to assess what’s serving you and what needs to shift. Life’s curveballs often happen to redirect us back to where we need to be, so trust the pivot.
3. Get Control of Your Thoughts and Emotions Before They Run Wild
Overthinking and emotional overwhelm can easily spiral out of control, leading to even more stress and confusion. To regain your balance, you must take control of your thoughts and emotions. Practices like meditation, journaling, or simply sitting in silence can help ground you and bring clarity. When we calm our minds, we make space for wisdom to flow in, allowing us to make aligned decisions moving forward.
4. Surrender, Trust, and Take One Small Action Daily
The key to navigating life’s curveballs is surrendering to the flow of the universe. This doesn’t mean you’re giving up; it means trusting that the universe has a plan for you, even when it’s hard to see the bigger picture. Once you surrender, commit to taking one small action every day. This could be something as simple as self-care or following an intuitive nudge. These small steps will slowly lead you back to alignment.
How to Bring Yourself Back from “Being on the Edge”
We’ve all had those moments when we feel like we’re teetering on the edge of breaking down or giving up.
It can feel as though everything is falling apart.
But I want you to remember this: You’re not broken. You’re in the process of rebuilding.
When you’re on the edge, it’s a signal that you’re at a turning point in your life.
You’re being asked to release the old ways of being, so that you can make space for something new. And in order to rebuild, you need to be still, reflect, and trust the process.
The edge is simply where transformation begins.
Why Choosing Yourself Matters More Than Making Everyone Else Happy
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned from my recent experience is that choosing yourself is the most powerful decision you can make.
It’s so easy to get caught up in people-pleasing or sacrificing your own well-being for others, but the truth is, you cannot show up as your highest self when you’re constantly putting others first.
Choosing yourself doesn’t mean you’re neglecting others—it means you’re honoring your own needs and boundaries so that you can show up as a whole, grounded person.
When you prioritize yourself, you can better serve others from a place of abundance instead of depletion.
Final Thoughts: Trusting the Process and Anchoring Stability
Even though you may be suffering and undergoing the hard tests of life, one thing that will get you through it is this statement: Everything that happens works in my favor.
I remember when I heard this statement. It was early this week and I was in the pits. I had just finished crying my eyes out to my husband and I joined a coaching call with my Being in Business Coach.
He shared this statement because it was part of an overall discussion. But these words…it cut through all the noise in my head and I felt like I was being spiritually shaken awake,
Everything that happens works in my favor.
Everything that happens works in my favor.
Everything that happens works in my favor.
When I started to repeat this mantra, it became an anchor in the stormy seas.
It became a way for me to step off the edge and start coming back to me.
It became the words of spirit and my guides who were encouraging to just take it one day at a time.
So I leave you with this, when you’re in the heart of suffering and you just feel like you can’t take it anymore, choose YOU and take a moment to stop.
If you can start to repeat -Everything that happens works in my favor - you can begin to exist above the suffering to have compassion for yourself and others.
And to be honest, there’s truth in that. Though you can’t always see it, everything that happens works in your favor. So take this message and may it bless your day with light, healing and love.
If you’re feeling like life is throwing curveballs your way, or if you’re in a season of suffering or struggle, remember: these moments are not the end—they are the invitation to realign, heal, and grow.
The universe has your back, and the challenges you face are a part of your soul’s contract to evolve.
By choosing to embrace the suffering, surrendering to the flow, and following the four simple steps I’ve shared, you can transform your challenges into opportunities for spiritual and personal growth.
